OverviewThis 4,000 square foot flagship site required balancing scalability and reliability while adhering to budget constraints. The most important issue for this client was to minimize any potential of system downtime while achieving reasonably priced services to invest wisely. SolutionCRSC performed a detailed data centre power study, based on actual existing usage, proposed usage increase and equipment power requirement trending. From this, a UPS size was specified. We then installed two units in parallel for redundancy and connected them through static switches. As a result, either UPS could power the load in the event that the other was put offline. To increase uptime security, we installed an emergency power diesel generator that can supply the power stream, HVAC, and all other necessary ancillary equipment maintaining the site. A redundant diesel generator has been planned for future growth. A site of this physical size must be planned with both long and short term harmonics. Mitigating harmonics at larger sites decreases the risk of premature equipment failure and increases the expected lifespan. Furthermore, eliminating wasteful harmonics in a system can reduce the total amount of power used. As a result, utility costs are lowered and the size of the required diesel generator can be reduced.
